Upgrading and retrofitting an asphalt mixing plant

A retrofit with state-of-the-art automation technology can be a viable alternative to replacing it with an all-new automation system, as evidenced by KWS, an asphalt mixing plant in the Netherlands, located in the town of Staphorst near Meppel. The equipment at this plant was controlled by Simatic S5 PLC. Prior to modernisation, the facility was controlled by Simatic S5 and visualisation and recipe control were based on MS-DOS. Both the software and the hardware needed an overhaul because S5 components had become difficult to source. With minimal downtime, KELLER implemented an open-system, modular architecture for controls, including a sophisticated visualisation tool.
