How the Romans burned bricks
KELLER HCW sponsors unique experiment
[August 2009] How the Romans burned bricks – with this exceptional experiment on the occasion of the «Varus Year» the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe (LWL) tries to find out how the Romans used to burn bricks. Within the scope of the current exhibition «Varus and the Bricks and Tiles of Rome», which will run in Lage until September 20th, 2009, the LWL Industrial Museum has – supported by KELLER HCW – reconstructed a Roman garrison brick kiln.
The idea emerged in 1992 when Wolfgang Gechter from the Rheinland Department for the Preservation and Care of Field Monuments (LVR) found a Roman garrison brickyard in Dormagen. He thereupon prepared a reconstruction drawing illustrating the original Roman brick kiln. This drawing was the basis for a unique project sponsored by machine and plant constructor KELLER HCW, gas provider Eon-Ruhrgas (Essen), the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR), the Netzwerk Lippe gGmbH as well as the companies Alphons Meyer KG and Ziegelwerk Schüring.
The construction of the kiln was begun in March 2009. For this purpose, Roman replicas were reproduced. About 5.000 handmade bricks were especially produced in the LWL Industrial Museum in Lage. The firing chamber of the kiln was equipped with "Roman pottery". The kiln itself was equipped with measuring devices.
After several months of reconstruction, the kiln will now be put into operation on Sunday, August 16, by igniting the fire in the presence of all sponsors and supporters of the project.
